Early Life and Education
Dr. Umesh Chandra was born on July 1, 1964, in a modest household in Village Pahasa, Mau, and was brought up in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. He inherited the values of compassion and social service from his father, Shri Babu Lal Gond. From an early age, he actively participated in social gatherings alongside his father, which shaped his passion for community service.
After completing his schooling with a focus on science, he joined the Indian Navy in 1982. During his tenure, he pursued higher education and earned a B.Tech in Electrical Engineering. He also completed a Diploma in Rail Transport & Management, MSW (Master of Social Work), and M.A. in Political Science, reflecting his commitment to continuous learning.
Distinguished Career
Dr. Umesh Chandra served in the Indian Navy with dedication, participating in various military operations and goodwill missions to countries including Seychelles, Madagascar, Philippines, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, and Malaysia.
After retiring from the Navy in 1997, he joined the Department of Telecommunications in 2000 as an Electrical Engineer and later retired voluntarily in 2020 as a Sub-Divisional Engineer, completing a distinguished career in both military and civil services.
Leadership in Social and Political Platforms
Driven by his passion for social justice, Dr. Umesh Chandra has held several leadership roles. He served as the National President of Mulnivasi Sangh and National Vice President of BAMCEF.
He currently serves as the Chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Adivasi Congress and works actively for tribal rights and marginalized communities. He is also the Secretary General of Adivasi Kalyan Samiti, President of Bhartiya Gantantra Rakshak Sangh and Bharatvarshiya Gond Adivasi Mahasabha, and a member of the World Human Rights Protection Commission.
Achievements and Honors
In 2021, Dr. Umesh Chandra received an honorary doctorate from the World Human Rights Protection Commission for his social work. His NGO, Adivasi Kalyan Samiti, was recognized as the Best NGO Working for Human Rights at the Indian Icon Award in 2022.
He was honored with the National Padma Bhushan Samman in 2023 for his contributions to human rights and tribal welfare. In 2025, he received the International Peace Ambassador Award in New Delhi for his remarkable role in social work and human rights.

He was honored with the Rashtriya Padma Bhushan Samman in 2023 for his outstanding achievement and remarkable role in Social Work, he is also the member of Bharat Gaurav Ratna Shri Sammaan Council. In 2025, he received the International Peace Ambassador Award in New Delhi for his remarkable role in social work and human rights.

Dr. Umesh Chandra’s mission centers on promoting constitutional values of Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity. Through initiatives led by Adivasi Kalyan Samiti and Bhartiya Gantantra Rakshak Sangh, he works toward empowering tribal communities and safeguarding their rights.
