Rocket Ball is not just a sport. It is a journey that began with a brother’s love, a simple idea and a dream to help someone remain active and confident.
In 2002, in Tamil Nadu, India, Dr. A. Gopala Krishnan created Rocket Ball for his younger brother, Satheesh, who had been affected by polio. As his condition progressed, Satheesh gradually lost his ability to walk and found it difficult to participate in many ordinary sporting activities.
Wanting to create an activity that his brother could enjoy within a limited space, Dr. Gopala Krishnan began thinking about a simple ball game that would be different from traditional sports.
That idea became the beginning of Rocket Ball.
The early concept was simple — a ball, a goal pole and a playing area where players could pass, throw, catch and develop their skills. What started as a small family effort slowly developed into a structured sport with its own playing system, equipment, rules and techniques.
Over the years, Dr. Gopala Krishnan continued to develop the game and work on its rules and playing format. The original purpose remained at the heart of Rocket Ball: creating an active, engaging and accessible sporting experience.
In 2017, Satheesh passed away.
Although the person who inspired the creation of Rocket Ball was no longer there, his memory became an important part of the sport’s continuing journey. Dr. Gopala Krishnan decided that Rocket Ball should not remain only a game created for one family. It should become an opportunity for people in different communities and countries to discover a new sport.
From that point, the vision expanded.
Rocket Ball began moving beyond its original roots in Tamil Nadu and India, with efforts to introduce the sport internationally, develop players and coaches, train referees, establish national organisations and create opportunities for young people to participate.
Today, the International Rocket Ball Council (IRBC) is working to support the international development of the sport through official rules, technical guidance, coaching, referee development, training resources and international coordination.
Now, this journey is reaching another important milestone in Thailand.
The upcoming international championship in Bangkok will bring together Rocket Ball players, coaches, referees and representatives from different countries. It will provide an opportunity for international teams to compete, learn from one another and strengthen the global Rocket Ball community.
For Dr. A. Gopala Krishnan, the journey that began in 2002 with a simple idea for his younger brother has now grown into a much larger international vision.
From one family in Tamil Nadu to players and supporters across different countries, Rocket Ball continues to carry the same message:
A simple idea can become a global sporting journey when it is built with purpose, dedication and love.
Thailand is now becoming another important chapter in that journey.
