Abhirup Guha – A Journey of Slow, Steady and Purposeful Growth in E-commerce

Abhirup Guha

Abhirup Guha’s journey in e-commerce and digital marketing is a story of perseverance, continuous learning and the belief that meaningful growth takes time.

His professional journey did not begin in a traditional corporate environment. He started his career as a freelancer, working on digital marketing projects and gradually building his understanding of the digital ecosystem. In 2019, he took the next major step in his career by joining a startup, where the learning curve was steep and every day presented a new challenge.

In the early days, Abhirup often worked for more than 12 hours a day, not only to complete his day-to-day responsibilities but also to learn the fundamentals and nuances of digital marketing from his manager. Rather than viewing the long hours as a limitation, he treated them as an opportunity to learn. He spent years understanding how digital campaigns work, how consumers behave online, how e-commerce businesses grow and, most importantly, how digital marketing can translate into actual business outcomes.

His career subsequently took him through multiple e-commerce and digital roles across organisations including Tablt Pharmacy, Blue Tea India, Mallcom and Amwoodo, where he continued to broaden his expertise across e-commerce strategy, digital marketing, D2C and performance-driven growth. Publicly available career information reflects this progression from an early digital marketing role to senior e-commerce and D2C responsibilities.

Today, approximately eight years after beginning this professional journey, Abhirup heads the E-commerce and Digital division at GKB Opticals, where he is responsible for driving the brand’s digital commerce journey and strengthening the connection between the company’s physical retail network and its digital ecosystem.

At GKB Opticals, his work has extended beyond simply managing an online store. He has been involved in building and strengthening the broader digital customer journey, from website experience and e-commerce operations to digital marketing, performance campaigns, partnerships and customer acquisition.

One of the significant milestones of his journey at GKB has been his involvement in the company’s revamped website project. Working closely with the internal team and external partners, he played a key role in taking the project from vision to execution. The revamped digital experience was subsequently introduced across GKB’s extensive retail network, involving training and interaction with teams across approximately 97 stores and more than 500 team members. This process also allowed him to bring feedback from the company’s offline retail teams back into the digital ecosystem, helping create a more connected omnichannel experience.

His approach to e-commerce has consistently been rooted in the belief that technology alone does not create successful digital businesses. Understanding the customer, creating the right experience, connecting digital with offline retail and constantly learning from data and people are equally important.

Beyond his professional responsibilities, Abhirup has also made continuous learning a personal priority. While pursuing his career, he completed his Master’s in Marketing and successfully graduated with good grades. For him, academic learning and professional experience have complemented each other, allowing him to apply structured marketing knowledge to real-world business challenges.

His journey is particularly significant because it has not been defined by overnight success. It has been built one challenge at a time.

From starting as a freelancer, to working long hours at a startup, to learning digital marketing from the ground up, moving across different e-commerce organisations and eventually taking responsibility for an entire E-commerce and Digital division, Abhirup’s career reflects the power of consistency.

A philosophy that closely represents his journey is the classic lesson of the turtle and the rabbit:

“Slow and steady wins the race.”

Abhirup believes that success in e-commerce is not about how quickly someone reaches the destination, but about how consistently they keep learning, adapting and moving forward.

Today, his journey stands as an example of how curiosity can become expertise, expertise can become responsibility, and responsibility can eventually become leadership.

His story is ultimately not just about e-commerce. It is about starting from the bottom, embracing every challenge as a learning opportunity and steadily building a career through hard work, continuous education and an unwavering commitment to growth.
