Born on 21st May 1958 in Nagerkoil, Kanyakumari District, Tamil Nadu, Prof. Anandan Sankarasubramanian has established himself as one of the most respected names in dermatology. With a professional journey extending over four decades, he is recognized for his clinical brilliance, academic mentorship, and contributions that have shaped dermatology both in India and abroad.
Early Life and Academic Path
Prof. Anandan’s schooling began at SLB High School in his hometown, after which he pursued PUC at Scott Christian College. His medical career took root at JIPMER, Pondicherry, where he completed his MBBS in 1981. Fuelled by a deep interest in dermatology, he went on to earn his D.D. in 1983 and M.D. in Dermatology & STD in 1984. During these formative years, he also served as a Registrar at JIPMER, gaining both clinical and teaching expertise.
Professional Journey
His career began at VHS, Adyar, Chennai, where between 1985–1986 he worked as Project Coordinator for a USAID-supported leprosy program. The project involved extensive community surveys among nearly 200,000 people, and the administration of multidrug therapy. He further enhanced his expertise through specialized training at CLTRI, Chengalput.
In 1986, he joined Sri Ramachandra Medical College (SRMC), Chennai, beginning a long and distinguished tenure. Rising through multiple academic and administrative roles, he eventually became the Head of the Department of Dermatology. His leadership as Dean (2008 – Jan 2023) saw significant academic expansion at the institution. Since January 2023, he has been serving as Dean of Students at SRIHER, and from June 2024, he continues his academic service as Professor of Eminence in Dermatology.
Mentor and Educator
With 41 years of undergraduate and 38 years of postgraduate teaching, Prof. Anandan has shaped countless medical professionals. He has guided several Ph.D. scholars and acted as an examiner for premier institutes including AIIMS, JIPMER, and PGI Chandigarh, ensuring the highest academic standards.
Leadership and Recognition
Prof. Anandan has been actively involved in professional associations, serving as President of IADVL Tamil Nadu (2011–12) and as a Central Council Member. His reputation as a speaker has led to more than 100 guest lectures at national and international conferences.
