Dr. Prasanjit Mukherjee: A Pioneer in Aquatic Angiosperm Research

Prasanjit Mukherjee

Dr. Prasanjit Mukherjee, son of Shayama Pado Mukherjee, was born in Lohardaga, a small town in Jharkhand, in 1969. He completed his Honors and Master’s degree in Botany from Ranchi College, Ranchi. He obtained his Ph.D. in 2001 under the supervision of the veteran plant taxonomist Dr. T. K. Ghosh, Retd. University Professor, University Department of Botany, Ranchi University, Ranchi.

He is credited with being the second person in Jharkhand to obtain a D.Sc. degree in Botany, under the supervision of Prof. (Dr.) Jyoti Kumar, University Professor, University Department of Botany, Ranchi University, Ranchi. He is a pioneer in the field of research on aquatic angiosperms in Jharkhand.

He has served as the Sectional Recorder (Environmental Science Section) in the 98th and 99th sessions of the Indian Science Congress, and as Councillor of the Indian Botanical Society (2017–2020 & 2023–2026).

Dr. Mukherjee has published around 77 research papers in national and international journals and has authored 4 books. He has presented papers and participated in more than 100 seminars and conferences across India. He is also a member of the Jharkhand Biodiversity Board.

He has received several national and international awards for his academic contributions. Recently, his name was proposed for the prestigious Dr. S. K. Jain Medal by the Society of Ethnobotanists for his significant contribution to the field of ethnobotany.

He is regarded as a promising plant taxonomist from Jharkhand. Presently, he is serving as the Head, Department of Botany, K.O. College, Gumla.
Dr. Mukherjee has successfully guided four Ph.D. scholars.
